Center Midfielder, A Lost Art?

The center midfielder position is becoming a lost art. Players are now designated roles, for instance, a defensive mid. In the Premier League there are still those left tasked with winning the ball, keeping possession and providing support to the attack. A great, or even good, true central mid needs stamina, technique, grit, defensive and offensive prowess, positional awareness and not essential but beneficial, leadership.

The list of quality players with the above, for this season and moving forward, is shorter than you may think. First let me address those left off the list and the reason for it:

Gerrard (with age has become a deep lying playmaker, Although on his day he can still top this list)
Lampard (similar to Gerrard but these days is relied on for specific duties as appose to the whole package)
Michu started a midfielder but has slowly been converted into a traditional number 10
Rooney I think could be a top 5 center mid in the world, but alas Moyes still sees him as a support striker/advanced mid
Cabaye just doesn’t provide enough defensively based on the eye test for me

Let’s have look around the league of the best center mids left;

Best Center Midfielders

Aaron Ramsey – let’s start with the current obvious choice. Stealing all the headlines and in the form of his life, Mr Ramsey is awakening those previously oblivious to his ability with some truly sumptuous performances. Leading the league in tackles from mid as of writing this while chipping in with 6 goals already he is currently the definition of a try centre mid. With Flamini to help defined and Ozil providing offensive spark, Ramsey has found himself contributing on both ends but not having to be the best at either (although currently he is Arsenals most dangerous midfielder). Ironically, despite the dearth of center mids, Arsenal have another in Wiltshire who provides a little bit of everything on both ends of the pitch. But current Aaron is ahead in development and performances.

Moussa Dembele – there are a few Tottenham players you could consider putting on this list, including a favourite of mine Sandro. But with Dembele you have the more in form player, capable of bossing a midfield while having deceptive technique and vision being able to contribute with goals/assists also. It wasn’t long ago he went to Old Trafford and absolutely bossed the midfield on both sides of the ball. A truly gifted player who perhaps doesn’t get his just due.

Marouanne Fellaini – defensively a stalwart but I do question his technique as it’s definitely not on par with the two above. He uses his giant build to boss the midfield and protect his back four while as evidenced last year, he is absolutely more than capable of contributing with goals. He even played some time as a support striker for Everton and I expect this to dip dramatically this year at United. He could form a great middle with Carrick/Kagawa but whether we see it is a another story. He may be off this list next year however as United look like they may begin to employ him more strictly as a defensive mid.

YaYa Toure – impossible to do this list without him. City struggled at times last year and it coincided with the form of the truly dominating Ivory Coast giant. Physically he is able to bully just about any team in the world while he has the technique and attacking know how to rival anyone on this list. He brings drive, power, a deft touch and goalscoring ability. Man City have traditionally liked to push him further up the pitch due to difficulty presented in marking him but time and again he has proven he is more than capable of shielding the back four.

Who do you think is the best from the above and who else should be on the list? Is the true center mid a dying position?

Manchester United Will Rank Top 5

soccer

Louis van Gaal is a world-class manager, you may not know that if you started watching football in the last two weeks, but as a Man United Fan I believe Man United will finish top 5 and here are my 5 reasons why (when I say top 5 I mean top 6 I will just never openly admit we could finish so low)

1. Firstly lets start with Louis Van Failing at the moment, he’s managed clubs in Spain, Germany and the Netherlands and won the league title in each, sounds like Mourinho esqe to me and trust me he has bigger balls. He’s won the

  • European Cup
  • UEFA Cup
  • UEFA Super Cup,
  • And a whole host of domestic trophies.

In the two seasons with AZ in Holland they were in the UEFA Cup, having endured 22 years without any European competition. In Van Gaal’s first season at the club, he guided AZ to finishing in one of the Champions League qualifying positions, let’s hope he can do the same again, except this time with a (slightly) better team and a bigger wallet

So let’s talk about this wallet…

2. Woodward

Assume the blank part of this blog to be a lot of curse words and mocking chants, he is a laughing stock and has brought himself a little bit of time by buying Di Maria,  after last summer failing to bring in any players beside Marouane Fellaini. He now has Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, and Marcos Rojo. When you consider that six players have left the club this summer, United’s squad is arguably worse than it was last season. Ok not arguable but yes its awful.

Futhermore Di Maria for 60+ is a head scratcher to me for the following reasons (firstly I just want to say he is an amazing player)

Di Maria is not a 3-5-2 formation player, which is a system Van Gaal loves and plays a lot. He may play as a winger and then I wonder how he will fit in as a Premiership winger, with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney the automatic first-choice strikers and no shortage of attacking midfielders at United, e.g. Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, it’s hard to see how Di Maria fits in – unless Van Gaal is set to scrap the 3-5-2 already.

Anyone who analyses the Red Devils can see the obvious areas of weakness in their squad – a lack of ball-winning midfielders and experienced central defenders being the priority. Instead, they have splurged £60million on a luxury player when they are not short of talent who can create chances and score goals. Why that money didn’t go to Mats Hummels or Sami Khedira type of player when they have Van Persie, Rooney, Mata, Herrera and Shinji Kagawa.

Why is this a reason Man United can win because Van Gaal isn’t dumb, if he can see this I can see this and that means he isn’t done when it comes to buying which is exciting.

No way, expect to see more big buys and trades.

3. MK Dons decimated Man United, no seriously they decimated Man United, like they where playing 95 Fifa, it was absolutely humiliating it was like playing online and Man United server had lag. It was the worse introduction from Van Gaal to the Capital One Cup, watching his team suffer a 4-0 defeat, however look at this way (EXTREME SILVER LINING) we are out the champions league, out the capital one cup, now we have very few games and with players like RVP who only managed 18 starts in league games last season (and won’t do more than 25 this year) they only have a few games to focus on, no one needs to be rested for international games, no one needs to travel we can put all out energy into the league.

4. I am not a fan in any way shape rhyme or reason of Wayne Rooney but he is one of the most effective players in the league every season, Rooney scored 17 goals and assisted 10 in 27 starts last season. The year before, it was 12 goals and 10 assists in 22 starts. The year before that, 27 goals and 4 assists in 32 starts not too shabby (even if that doesn’t account for what games those games where in and their importance) numbers never lie

This guy is has now signed a new contract and, more recently, been named captain, Rooney’s future should now be tied to the club. Without those distractions and with a renewed desire to lead the club to success, maybe now United fans will see the striker step it up a gear in a bid to reclaim European football.

He now has nowhere to hide, the spot light is on him and he will sink or swim, I think Man United will make him swim but if he sinks, so be it and Van can find out sooner rather than later.

5. A report by BBC Sport claimed that United stand to lose £40-50 million this year thanks to the absence of Champions League football, I personally think it’s more if your accounting for all the international (Asian fans) we could lose as they only follow winners.

The Glazer family bought the club to make money and cannot afford to be out of the Champions League for too long. Not simply for the money for competing and television revenue but also for the sponsors that being one of the best clubs in the world attracts.

You would therefore presume that they would stump up the cash to buy the players needed to put the squad in contention for finishing in the top four again.

So these are my 5 reasons and I honestly don’t feel like I’m clutching at straws the key will be

  • Can Herrea, Rojo and Di Maria be instant stars
  • Can Old players find old form or new stardom
  • Do we have any young players who are going to have a breakout season
  • Do the players want it or will the stress overcome them

Rickie Lambert Got Nutmegged

Sterling

Raheem Sterling in my opinion is the best English young talent bar Sturridge who now know longer has to have the youth talent caveat, but this is why Raheem is special,  I feel sorry for Rickie Lambert but actually no I don’t, Raheem Sterling nutmegging him in training, watch and enjoy.

Sterling delivers a neat reverse flick that sends the ball through Lambert’s legs.

Premier League — In Trouble?

The Premier League has always been widely considered by many to be the best, the apologist use varied arguments;

premier

) Star players – summer of 2013 saw Mesut Ozil and Alvaro Negredo swap La Liga for the Premier League, while Christian Eriksen and Willian spurned offers from across the globe to join Tottenham and Chelsea respectively. Romelulu Lukaku, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Philppe Coutinho and Rahim Sterling are some of the most talented young footballers around.

2) Excitement – The premiership is played at 90mph, with many unpredictable results (Aston Villa’s 3-1 opening day away win at Arsenal). Four points separated Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and  Liverpool. Apparently the premiership is so intense, I know you have probably heard the could Messi do it in the Premiership argument as well.

3) Managers – From the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson’s near thirty-year reign at Manchester United to Guus Hiddink’s spell with Chelsea, Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini and some of the brightest rising stars, namely Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez.

) The Fans So far this season, Swansea have the lowest average attendance at 20,328, and although that seems low, it represents a mammoth 98% of their capacity, meaning nearly every single game is a sell-out.

Santi Cazorla  said  ‘in England it’s far more level, more competitive. For me, it’s better. It’s possible, for example, that Manchester City play against Cardiff and lose. In Spain, its normal that Real Madrid play against Real Mallorca and win, win, win – it’s very difficult for other teams.

Allow me to call Bullshit!

premier3The Bundesliga level of customer service is better than a happy ending, it has the lowest ticket prices and the highest average attendance of Europe’s five major leagues. Borussia Dortmund costs little more than £10 entrance. Match tickets double as free rail passes for supporters travelling are allowed to sing, drink beer to wash down their bratwurst.

Even across the river, the MLS franchises is becoming more and more relevant none more impressive than Seattle, where Sounders soccer having an Average attendance exceeds 40,000, look at the support America had for the world cup, one word scary.

With Sir Alex retired from the management game, can the premier league still boost the best managers when we are so far from dreaming of a champion’s league, whilst still spending in excess of most clubs globally?

Now to the meat of this discussion the level of players and the excitement of the league, can we not mention Brazil pillage for a minute and focus on the world cup.

Chris Waddle said “I’ll tell you what the biggest problem is when you think about it all – the Premier League. They have a product which they sell around the world. It’s entertaining but it’s doing our players no good whatsoever.

“This (England) is a Premier League side playing tonight which is meant to be the best league in the world. You’re not telling me all those Uruguayan players would get in many teams around the world, apart from (Luis) Suarez who was only 75 per cent fit. (Edinson) Cavani, possibly. Apart from that, who else is there?”

“We go on banging the drum that we’ve got this and that. Do you know what makes the Premier League exciting? Players like Luis Suarez – the foreign players,” he said.

“We hype our players up massively like we always do, say we’ve got this and that.

Jamie Carragher  said it best “Look at Costa Rica how did we lose when not one of their players would have made it in the England team” (translated from scousser)

The reason why Costa Rica players wouldn’t make it in the English team is because they play in a league where the excitement and 90 mph speed is like perfume on SHIT, it allows us to think the premier league level of football is a lot better than it is. I think people  find la liga boring because they play fundamental football, great passing, great movement great iq and awareness and it is taught from an early age.

Sir Trevor Brooking, the director of development at the Football Association, believes England lags behind because the players are not learning these technical skills early enough.

“We need to start earlier,” Brooking told BBC Sport. “Anybody emerging from the 5-11 age group has to be comfortable on the ball. Can you get this ball under control? Can you kill it instantly? Have you got the know-how to make decisions? Do you know how to use it and select the right pass?

In Dutch football they play from an early age without goals, in Spain and Brazil Footsal is a huge sport where the ball is bigger and heavier focusing on learning skills and control. When the kids are so young, it is not time to think about winning, to think only about winning as you do.

You have to develop them, teach them how to pass a ball, how to control a ball, how to control a game, how to cross, head and shoot. It is not important to tell the kids to win – you must instead teach them the skills that will help them to become winners.

The majority of players exciting us in the premier league aren’t even English and didn’t come through the English youth system, to make it worse the Premier League doesn’t even have the world’s best players anymore players like Thierry Henrys, Rudd Van Nistelrooy, Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp, Gianfranco Zola, Cristiano Ronaldo, and David Beckham are now a distant memory.

premier5Players are now distancing themselves from the once mighty English Premier League to play in La Liga, Bundesliga, and the Ligue 1. At one point or another Neymar, Thiago Alcantara, Radamel Falcao, and Edinson Cavani.were rumoured to be making a move to England but the moves never happened. Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez have flown the nest to bigger pastures.

I do understand that London doesn’t have the same problem as the Midlands or Manchester clubs do, but England in general doesn’t offer these guys some of the lifestyle they are accustomed to on the continent, or the weather requirements that them and their families want to live on that, however let’s not kid ourselves its not just Barca and Real, the majority of midlevel Spanish teams have and will beat premiership teams.

The premier league needs a stronger focus on youth football progression to see an internal growth as appose to bringing over superstars all the time and not having the patience to grow them, like Sir Alex and somewhat Wenger thrived off.

Arsène Wenger on coaching…

“The first thing to do is to give them the basics. The basics are technique, and you go from there. To make a comparison, it’s a bit like when you have a child – first you want to teach him a vocabulary so he can express himself. The technique is a vocabulary of a football player – that’s the basis. After that, you want your child to use intelligent sentences.”

Yes the Premier league is the most exciting league in the world but I do not think it is because they play the best football, because clearly they don’t and if English football doesn’t change expect English football to become the laughing stock of sports, it’s embarrassing like America losing in NBA, football is English and thus I plead with these youth coaches that they implore smarter teaching styles and techniques to bring out the best from out players.

World Cup Predictions 2015

world cup

The fact that this year’s World Cup is being held in Brazil leads many to hope that the host nation will revive memories of 1970 in their performances – and their performances in the friendlies leading up to the tournament have shown that this is a side with lots of goals in it. The bookies fancy them pretty strongly, as they have been made 3/1 odds-on favourites by many – with their South American rivals Argentina just behind in the betting on 5/1. It would mean a huge amount to Argentina to win the tournament on Brazilian soil, and they looked really impressive throughout qualification (plus they have Lionel Messi).

They have the weight of failure to overcome though, having been disappointing in World Cups since winning back in 1986, while Spain are the side that has swept all before it over the past ten years. You can get 7/1 on them, but they are not as fancied by many football gambling fans as you might expect – as they often looked unconvincing in the qualifying. Winning again may be a bridge too far for them, whereas Germany (11/2) are younger and hungry to make their mark with another World Cup win. Most think it will be one of these sides holding the trophy aloft at the end of the tournament, but if you can’t pick, Soccer Safari will give you a good chance of holding a payout aloft yourself.

It is a slots game – and they have always been the favourites that gives the player the best chance of a win at an online casino such as www.luckynuggetcasino.com/au. They are also usually cheap to bet on – and Soccer Safari is no exception, with the lowest deposit you can place to play being $0.01 for each of the 30 pay lines. However what really makes this five-reel Microgaming slot is the actual idea behind it – an all-animal version of the World Cup – and the animations and video that bring it to life. As you would expect, it is all very funny, while the extra game where you have to score penalties against the leopard in goal, will be one of the major bonuses of the game for football fans.

Thomas Hitzlsperger Is Gay

Thomas H

Weeks after Tom Daley, Thomas Hitzlsperger becomes the first high-profile footballer to come out as gay. The former Aston Villa, West Ham and Everton player has given a long interview to the German paper Die Zeit, in which he says that he is talking about his sexuality because he wants “to further the debate about homosexuality among sports professionals”.

Hitzlsperger has been a German International 52 times, playing in a World Cup and a European Championship and won the Bundesliga with Stuttgart. He retired last september and has played for Lazio in Italy and Wolfsburg. “It’s been a long and difficult process” [of becoming aware of being gay]. Only in the last few years have I realised that I preferred living together with a man,” Hitzlsperger added.

“In England, Italy and Germany being a homosexual is no big thing, at least not in the dressing room,” he said, before adding: “I was never ashamed of being who I am but it was not always easy to sit on a table with 20 young men and listen to jokes about gays. You let them get on with it as long as the jokes are somewhat funny and not too insulting.

“Being gay is topic that is ‘ignored’ in football and not ‘a serious topic in the changing room’. Fighting spirit, passion and winning mentality are intrinsically linked, that doesn’t fit the cliché: ‘Gays are soft’”.

I wonder if this will lead more people to come out and open the flood gates and it will be interesting to see how the fans react.
